The Highs & The Woes

Image
The Highs and the Woes Anglo-Celtic folk selection from around the British Isles. Highlights include songs from Martin Simpson 's amazing 2002 LP Bramble Briar while the irrepressible Dambert Nobacon returns with two well crafted & entertaining songs from his Woebegone album (2019), sung in duet with Miranda Zickler . Woes indeed! Our ongoing, perrenial tribute to the work of Dick Gaughan continues with four interesting tracks from different periods. His song Outlaws and Dreamers is a wonderful ode to folk musicians, bards & rebels across the ages. We also revisit some classics by Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention . Both halves Of Show Of Hands are represented with duets as well as solo projects. Stream/download here     Singer-guitarist Chris Brain broke through post-covid, & has proven to be is a real prospect for the future already putting out his third LP this year. Tracks from his Steady Away (2023) and brand new New Light  albums feat...

45 Legends Of Folk Guitar

Image
Legends Of Folk Guitar 44 tracks of flowing acoustic music from across the years by 45 master guitarists. Acoustic guitars take centre stage here (give or take the odd mandolin, bouzouki or ukulele, lap steel, etc.) while recordings are either solo pieces or have only minimal accompaniment (unplugged) and date from the early 60s to the present. Stream/download here         This mix is not in any way definitive or comprehensive, in fact, there are countless glaring ommissions & oversights and of course there are gaps in my collection. There's still plenty to chew on here nonetheless...  Numerous big name appearances; from Bob Dylan, Donovan, Bert Jansch, Ralph McTell, John Renbourn & Dick Gaughan to Joni Mitchell, Julie Felix, Ry Cooder, Chris Cornell, Bonnie Raitt & Ani DiFranco. Paul Brady, Richard Thompson, Tracy Chapman, Kurt Cobain & Joan Baez to Stephen Stills, Ben Harper, Rory Gallagher, Neil Young, Martin Carthy & Steve Knightley. A ho...

Image
Hard Times Come Again No More   UK-American folk music session. Leads with some amazing tracks by folk-rock legends The Oysterband and songs from the Bob Pegg 's  The Last Wolf . Again we borrow heavily from various  Aly Bain Transatlantic Session  recordings. Cover pic shot right here in Mahasarakham, Thailand.   Listen to Hard Times Come Again No More by Old Timer in Isan on hearthis.at     Bob Pegg 's The Last Wolf  (1996) is an acoustic album that covers a number of topics and styles, including the rather odd  Man from Luddenden Dene , a traditional Calderdale ditty (I know Luddenden well as I used to walk the dog while waiting for my MOTs up there haha). He teams up with the late Chris Coe for a 'hard times' local lament. Richard & Linda Thompson cover by Allison Krauss . Superb band version of Both Sides of the Tweed by Dick Gaughan . Multi-instrumentalist Paul Brady  (formerly of  The Johnsons ) stuns on...

Image
Sad Wastelands Of The Free Protest Fuelled Folky Punk Rock Session  led by the likes of The Oysterband, Show Of Hands, Frank Turner, Iris Dement, Steve Earle and Crass. Tunes from across the years. The essense of the struggle never changes it has just shifted up a few gears recently in this new post-humane and science-phobic era. Spotlight on veteran US folk/punk rock artist Chuck Ragan with tracks from his brilliant 2007 LP Feast Or Famine.  Listen to Sad Wastelands Of The Free by Old Timer in Isan on hearthis.at    THE TEMPTING, GLITTERING MIRAGE THAT CAPITALISTS IMPOSE ON REALITY MASKS THE UGLY FACT THAT POVERTY, INJUSTICE AND MISUSE OF POWER ARE INTEGRAL, ESSENTIAL COGS IN THE MACHINERY OF MASS EXTORTION. They are building multi-billion £ football stadiums everywhere at a time when the use of charitable food banks, homelessness & poverty are on the rise. They take money from the poorest to pay for their international warmongering & interfering w...
