Ramblin' Round

Image
Ramblin' Round Tribute to a lifestyle & ideal , the unfettered freedom of movement & self-expression, a world where the arts, shared knowledge and spirituality equal the sciences and technology in importance, a society which emphasises community, collaboration, equality & harmonious equilibrium over profit & control from above. What is our reason for living?? A number of us would say to find harmony with nature & the universe... While the act of singing topical broadsides, protest songs and social laments must date back to the very birth of anatomically modern human communities, tens or even hundreds of thousands of years, the 20th century saw the first recorded & mass distributed recordings enabling songs by the likes of The Weavers, Ewan MacColl, Nina Simone and Woody Guthrie to reach wide audiences across both space and time. The Dylan-Baez generation & their understudies, from John Lennon to Arlo Guthrie to Dick Gaughan, kept pushing it further. T...

Existence is Resistance

Image
Existence is Resistance Topical songs from all eras together with some beautiful Palestinian music.      Protesting war & the inhumane behavior of a cabal of corrupt Israel-centric heads of government. A cry for peace and a return to the charter of human rights under a relevant & influencial federated international organisation with real powers.  We condemn  the normalisation of genocide, child murder (& child abuse for that matter - Epstein), double-tap strikes, carpet bombing of cities & hospitals, killing of journalists and a host of other atrocities. We must work towards a return to some kind of moral order, press for a fair, equitable reconstruction and fight for a fairer society and a more sustainable world.      ^^stream & download^^ TAP PLAY ONCE THEN TWICE to play here or tap building icon to enter the internet archives page & stream or d/l^^ Illustrations from the  Middle East Children’s Alliance art tour Co...

On the Wings of the Wind

Image
Freedom on the Wings of the Wind Relaxing and reflective selection of relatively contemporary British & North American folk. Oh to be as free as a bird... Taking inspiration from the natural world that surrounds us. Only through peaceful contemplation can one really know peace and communion with nature is a grounding, humbling and experience which helps lift one's spirits while we break free from the rat race & the troubles of the world, even just for a while... Wonderful acoustic guitar playing throughout.   ^^stream & download^^ TAP PLAY TWICE or tap icons^^   Shining a spotlight on the legendary Tracy Chapman with four deep, insightful songs from 1989-2010. In 1977 Bert Jansch teamed up with Martin Jenkins & Danny Thompson to make the avian themed  Avocet album, an instrumental tour-de-force, of which excepts are interspersed throughout this session. Focus on Scotland's  The McCalmans also with four excellent ballads & laments from 1980 ...

Give Peace a Chance 2026

Image
Give Peace a Chance 2026   Topical folk songs, many lamenting and protesting war. Economically motivated conflict benefits only the very few while causing immense damage, loss & suffering. The forecasts for 2026 are ominous as the new year immediately kicked off with more illegal US foreign aggression and more threats against sovereign nations. People link up and demand an end to unnecessary warmongering, sabre-rattling and war conscription while pressuring governments to follow the UN Charter on Human Rights and  show full support for  the ICC, the ICJ, the ECHR and the UN itself so they can all get on with their work in making the world a better place for us all. GIVE PEACE A CHANCE!       ^^stream & download^^ TAP PLAY TWICE or tap on logo^^       The mix opens & concludes most fittingly with John Lennon & the Plastic Ono Band .  Longtime advocate for peace  June Tabor  features with some moving songs fr...

Voices

Image
Voices 2025 Outlaws & Heroes. All-era Folk, blues, country, americana selection with the usual healthy focus on protest songs.   ^^stream & download^^ CLICK PLAY TWICE There's a whole load of shite going off in the world right now with levels of ignorance, misinformation, cruelty, inhumanity, surveilance & polarisation not seen in the West in 80 years. With our freedoms, economic security and the living planet itself under serious threat billionaires are running amok, stirring up racial predjudice & class war to cover up their ebezzlement en mass  while impoverishing governments (i.e. the people) at previously unseen levels everywhere . Enough is enough! The people must & will prevail over big money and greed eventually due to total unsustainability. It requires a complete overturn of economic & management systems as we know them though and will involve some personal sacrifices and lifestyle changes but it is doable. Right now, while we're on the ...

Joan Baez Folk Songbook 1958-1967

Image
Folk Songbook 1958-1967 A selection of the best folk songs from Joan Baez's early repertoire, 1958-67. ^^stream & download^^   Few folk artists (Bob Dylan excepted) have been so widely influencial to so many other artists. Everyone from Fairport & Sandy Denny, to Pentangle & Emmylou Harris, from June Tabor to Joni Mitchell & Judy Collins and from Steeleye Span & Show Of Hands to Paul Simon & Dylan himself site Joan Baez to some degree as an inspiration and a passer-onner of traditional songs & styles. She has of course been a great source of inspiration for aspiring female artists since way back in a male dominated music industry. Her vibrant stage presence, her superb guitar picking and especially her stunning five octave vocal range are something to behold! Simply outstanding. Joan has gone on to enjoy success over 7 decades, for close to 70 years now and, at 84 years of age, is still active today. She's also well known as an activist,...

Like A World Without End...

Image
Like A World Without End  and we though that this would go on forever... A wee reminder that nothing is eternal, everything is finite or goes through revolutionary change. All of the Earth's, our, resources must be protected & fostered if we are to look to a future but the capitalist mirage makers think only of today, paying little or no heed to long term sustainability, let alone the advancement of humanity and social justice. They can't see past the next $$$ or, rather, they don't give a hoot.  Listen to Like A World Without End by Old Timer in Isan on hearthis.at Selection of great protest songs old & new. Some cutting lyrics written by the legendary Leon Rosselson and a spotlight on vetaran campaigner & artist Eliza Gilkyson. Show of Hands are in serious militant mood. Touching also on the issue of homelessness and the exploding wealth gap.    Continuous mix 90mins. Download via the link above Thanks for dropping by!      ...

Joan Baez - Lebanon Palestine Last Lonely & Wretched

Image
Joan Baez - Lebanon 1987 Magnificent and largely overlooked song that was somehow excluded from her then current album, Recently (under lobbyist pressure?). Joan spent time in the levant in the mid-80s as she tried to raise awareness of what was going on in Lebanon & Palestine in particular. The lyric still resonates deeply today.   Joan Beaz - Last, Lonely and Wretched 1971 Real deep cut from Joan and a strong anti-war lyric.  From her 1971 double LP Blessed Are...  Blessed be the peacemakers. Joan Baez has always been and still is a flag bearer for good, progressive, humanist and socialist ideals as well as a proponent of musical & artistic traditions. A fabulous artist all round, strong songwriter and a true living legend. Thank you for the music Joan

Hard Times Come Again No More

Image
Hard Times Come Again No More   UK-American folk music session. Leads with some amazing tracks by folk-rock legends The Oysterband and songs from the Bob Pegg 's  The Last Wolf . Again we borrow heavily from various  Aly Bain Transatlantic Session  recordings. Cover pic shot right here in Mahasarakham, Thailand.   Listen to Hard Times Come Again No More by Old Timer in Isan on hearthis.at     Bob Pegg 's The Last Wolf  (1996) is an acoustic album that covers a number of topics and styles, including the rather odd  Man from Luddenden Dene , a traditional Calderdale ditty (I know Luddenden well as I used to walk the dog while waiting for my MOTs up there haha). He teams up with the late Chris Coe for a 'hard times' local lament. Richard & Linda Thompson cover by Allison Krauss . Superb band version of Both Sides of the Tweed by Dick Gaughan . Multi-instrumentalist Paul Brady  (formerly of  The Johnstons ) stuns on...
