Great Selkie of Sule Skerry

Image
The Great Selkie of Sule Skerry and other legendary folk ballads  Starring three amazing and very distinct versions of The Great Selkie of Sule Skerry  song, beginning with Barbara Dickson 's version from 1996, the classic cut by Judy Collins from 1962 and concluding with a mighty June Tabor interpretation from 2011. Selkies are mythological shape shifting half seal - half human hybrids from Norse and Celtic traditions. These selkie folk (Scots) who wear seal skin could be benevolent or vengeful in equal measure but could be tricked into marrying humans by the hiding of their precious seal skins. Such unions were usually deemed to have ended in tragedy. Selection of artful & fiddle-heavy folk numbers. ^^stream & download^^ TAP PLAY ONCE THEN TWICE to play here or tap building icon to enter the internet archives page (and our lives) & stream or d/l^^   Barbara Dickson  made a return to singing traditional material in the mid-90'. Existence is Resistance

Image
Existence is Resistance Topical songs from all eras together with some beautiful Palestinian music.      Protesting war & the inhumane behavior of a cabal of corrupt Israel-centric heads of government. A cry for peace and a return to the charter of human rights under a relevant & influencial federated international organisation with real powers.  We condemn  the normalisation of genocide, child murder (& child abuse for that matter - Epstein), double-tap strikes, carpet bombing of cities & hospitals, killing of journalists and a host of other atrocities. We must work towards a return to some kind of moral order, press for a fair, equitable reconstruction and fight for a fairer society and a more sustainable world.      ^^stream & download^^ TAP PLAY ONCE THEN TWICE to play here or tap building icon to enter the internet archives page & stream or d/l^^ Illustrations from the  Middle East Children’s Alliance art tour Co...

Of Time and Rivers...

Image
...of Time and Rivers...  All era folk & psych-folk mix. Songs peak & interlude in & out in the famous tradition of live Grateful Dead shows. Talking about ebb & flow... just like a river flowing...  as the very sands of time... Pete Seeger captured the essence of the inevitible passing of time wonderfully on two songs; River of My People & Of Time and Rivers Passing - both included here, the latter sung by Richie Havens  in salute. See if you can spot any other river songs... Enjoy some SF Grateful Dead party vibes as we continue to commemorate & celebrate Bob, Phil, Jerry and all the other greats up there after Bob Weir's recent passing.  Stella Blue,  Stella Blue When all the cards are down There's nothing left to see There's just the pavement left And broken dreams In the end, there's still that song Comes crying like the wind Down every lonely street That's ever been ....  Stella Blue    ^^stream & do...

Give Peace a Chance 2026

Image
Give Peace a Chance 2026   Topical folk songs, many lamenting and protesting war. Economically motivated conflict benefits only the very few while causing immense damage, loss & suffering. The forecasts for 2026 are ominous as the new year immediately kicked off with more illegal US foreign aggression and more threats against sovereign nations. People link up and demand an end to unnecessary warmongering, sabre-rattling and war conscription while pressuring governments to follow the UN Charter on Human Rights and  show full support for  the ICC, the ICJ, the ECHR and the UN itself so they can all get on with their work in making the world a better place for us all. Like A World Without End...

Image
Like A World Without End  and we though that this would go on forever... A wee reminder that nothing is eternal, everything is finite or goes through revolutionary change. All of the Earth's, our, resources must be protected & fostered if we are to look to a future but the capitalist mirage makers think only of today, paying little or no heed to long term sustainability, let alone the advancement of humanity and social justice. They can't see past the next $$$ or, rather, they don't give a hoot.  Listen to Like A World Without End by Old Timer in Isan on hearthis.at Selection of great protest songs old & new. Some cutting lyrics written by the legendary Leon Rosselson and a spotlight on vetaran campaigner & artist Eliza Gilkyson. Show of Hands are in serious militant mood. Cover pic shot right here in Mahasarakham, Thailand.   Listen to Hard Times Come Again No More by Old Timer in Isan on hearthis.at     Bob Pegg 's The Last Wolf  (1996) is an acoustic album that covers a number of topics and styles, including the rather odd  Man from Luddenden Dene , a traditional Calderdale ditty (I know Luddenden well as I used to walk the dog while waiting for my MOTs up there haha). He teams up with the late Chris Coe for a 'hard times' local lament. Richard & Linda Thompson cover by Allison Krauss . Superb band version of Both Sides of the Tweed by Dick Gaughan . Over The Hills And Far Away A somewhat eclectic landscape of folk, americana and country with a few rocky outcrops along the way...
