Highlighting Scottish groups the Battlefield Band and Clan Alba plus Gaelic singer Karen Matheson. Dick Gaughan is roundabouts, doing duets with Solas & Runrig as well as performing as part of Clan Alba. Field recordings of Choying Drolma who is a Tibetan folk artist and Buddhist nun. Cameo by the late Angie Stone rest in power. She backs up with a classic Stevie Wonder. Chilled & happy hit hi-life/fusion from Kokoroko and Osibisa (with a little help from some goat herders). Absolute classic from the late Bunny Wailer; a very moving rendition of the spiritual This Train. Agustín Lira is a legendary Mexican singer, guitarist & storyteller. Joan Baez comes with two political songs, one in Spanish; Prisoner Number Nine. Two nice Richard Thompson covers. A few protest songs here and there (of course hehe) and a couple of surprise inclusions to keep things fresh.
We take a short detour to Dilston Castle in Northumberland for a folk tale set in the cold facts of the Jacobite Rebellions. In this scenario the Catholic Lord Derewentwater, Sir James Ratclyffe, is led away from his estate to captivity and eventual execution in London. This episode is of particular personal interest for, being born and bred right there in Corbridge, we used to sneak into the castle to play and swim in Devil's Water below. Dilson Castle is reputed to be haunted by a certain Grey Lady - Lady Anne Derwentwater, Radclyffe's widow - but that's a story for anther time... Two very different interpretations of Lord Derwentwater's Farewell, first on the fiddle with Dave Swarbrick and then a reflective hornpipe cut by Carsten Rosenlund & Helen Davies. Clan Alba round off this Papish round trip with Cam Ye O'er Frae France.
