Few
folk artists (Bob Dylan excepted) have been so widely influencial to so
many other artists. Everyone from Fairport & Sandy Denny, to
Pentangle & Emmylou Harris, from June Tabor to Joni Mitchell &
Judy Collins and from Steeleye Span & Show Of Hands to Paul Simon
& Dylan himself site Joan Baez to some degree as an inspiration and a
passer-onner of traditional songs & styles. She has of course been a
great source of inspiration for aspiring female artists since way back
in a male dominated music industry.
Her vibrant
stage presence, her superb guitar picking and especially her stunning
five octave vocal range are something to behold! Simply outstanding.
Joan has gone on to enjoy success over 7 decades, for close to 70 years
now and, at 84 years of age, is still active today. She's also well
known as an activist, educator, humanist, artist and protestor and
continues in these roles to this day. A true living legend.
Selections in rough chronological order.
PART 1 1958-63

By 1963 Joan was a major star and leading light in the US folk
revival scene and was also got involved politically in the civil rights
and labour movements, culminating in the March on Washington that year.
Other major events of the time include the Newport Folk Festivals,
London Philharmonic and her Forest Hills Tennis Stadium concert. 1963-64
saw her perform often alongside muse & fellow musical guerilla Bob
Dylan as they drew inspiration from each other.
As
her association with Dylan fizzled out & the folk scene evolved,
Joan started to experiment with other sounds & styles but wisely
stayed close to her musical roots, releasing 2 fine folk LPs in 1964
& 65. 1966 saw her try out a jazzier, more mainstream sound with
arranger Peter Schickele.
Studio recordings
& live tracks from her 1963-65 tours, including from Newport &
London. Combinations with Bob Dylan, Donovan, Peter, Paul & Mary, Judy
Collins, the Lilly Brothers and Joan's sister Mimi Farina.
