Farewell, Farewell - Over the Ocean Far & Wide

Image
Farewell, Farewell Relaxing selection of music & song old and new from the world of folk music and beyond   ^^stream & download^^ TAP PLAY TWICE^^ Folk songs about leaving, departing, saying goodbye have long been a staple and during the 17th to 19th centuries, the age of empires, colonialism & expansion - in the Americas, Australia and the Indian subcontinent in particular, population movement was a constant theme. Whether travelling for work, conscription, due to penury & transportation or simply emigrating in search of a better life, it was an era of great demographic change & movement. While enjoying incredible economic expansion this was also, pointedly, a time of great social upheaval, poverty   inequality,  disinheritance and largely unregulated urbanisation with unprecedented levels & new types of social  pressure. Political choices also led to specific episodes of emmigration, such as the highland clearances & potato famine. The s...

Voices

Image
Voices 2025 Outlaws & Heroes. All-era Folk, blues, country, americana selection with the usual healthy focus on protest songs.   ^^stream & download^^ CLICK PLAY TWICE There's a whole load of shite going off in the world right now with levels of ignorance, misinformation, cruelty, inhumanity, surveilance & polarisation not seen in the West in 80 years. With our freedoms, economic security and the living planet itself under serious threat billionaires are running amok, stirring up racial predjudice & class war to cover up their ebezzlement en mass  while impoverishing governments (i.e. the people) at previously unseen levels everywhere . Enough is enough! The people must & will prevail over big money and greed eventually due to total unsustainability. It requires a complete overturn of economic & management systems as we know them though and will involve some personal sacrifices and lifestyle changes but it is doable. Right now, while we're on the ...

June Tabor & Friends - Fountains Flowing

Image
June Tabor & Friends - Fountains Flowing June Tabor is a cultural icon and towering figure in the folk music scene, the 'First Lady of Folk' releasing around 30 albums and performing at countless festivals & events since the early 70s. During this time she has collaborated with many other artists, crossing genres & breaking much new ground.   ^^stream & download^^ Folk music is not concerned with transmitting history and tradition alone but also serves to record contemporary events, causes and commentaries and June has excelled in this field, refusing to sell out by adhering stoically to purity of form... and this tenacity paid off eventually as she found success on her own terms. She is open to experimentation, occasionally trying her hand at jazz, rock and other styles (as can be heard here), but generally rejects modern revisionism and frequently performs in time-honoured, pure, unaccompanied a capella format. June has collaborated with a host of o...

Joan Baez Folk Songbook 1958-1967

Image
Folk Songbook 1958-1967 A selection of the best folk songs from Joan Baez's early repertoire, 1958-67. ^^stream & download^^   Few folk artists (Bob Dylan excepted) have been so widely influencial to so many other artists. Everyone from Fairport & Sandy Denny, to Pentangle & Emmylou Harris, from June Tabor to Joni Mitchell & Judy Collins and from Steeleye Span & Show Of Hands to Paul Simon & Dylan himself site Joan Baez to some degree as an inspiration and a passer-onner of traditional songs & styles. She has of course been a great source of inspiration for aspiring female artists since way back in a male dominated music industry. Her vibrant stage presence, her superb guitar picking and especially her stunning five octave vocal range are something to behold! Simply outstanding. Joan has gone on to enjoy success over 7 decades, for close to 70 years now and, at 84 years of age, is still active today. She's also well known as an activist,...

Like A World Without End...

Image
Like A World Without End  and we though that this would go on forever... A wee reminder that nothing is eternal, everything is finite or goes through revolutionary change. All of the Earth's, our, resources must be protected & fostered if we are to look to a future but the capitalist mirage makers think only of today, paying little or no heed to long term sustainability, let alone the advancement of humanity and social justice. They can't see past the next $$$ or, rather, they don't give a hoot.  Listen to Like A World Without End by Old Timer in Isan on hearthis.at Selection of great protest songs old & new. Some cutting lyrics written by the legendary Leon Rosselson and a spotlight on vetaran campaigner & artist Eliza Gilkyson. Show of Hands are in serious militant mood. Joan Beaz - Lebanon Palestine Last Lonely & Wretched

Image
Joan Baez - Lebanon 1987 Magnificent and largely overlooked song that was somehow excluded from her then current album, Recently (under lobbyist pressure?). Joan spent time in the levant in the mid-80s as she tried to raise awareness of what was going on in Lebanon & Palestine in particular. The lyric still resonates deeply today.   Joan Beaz - Last, Lonely and Wretched 1971 Real deep cut from Joan and a strong anti-war lyric.  From her 1971 double LP Blessed Are...  Blessed be the peacemakers. Joan Baez has always been and still is a flag bearer for good, progressive, humanist and socialist ideals as well as a proponent of musical & artistic traditions. A fabulous artist all round, strong songwriter and a true living legend. Thank you for the music Joan
