Saving Grace & Robert Plant return with their new 4 track EP All that Glitters. Two of them feature here: Two Coats is an old gospel song while, in another nod to Bert Jansch, Poison is a cover of a half-remembered 1969 number from the Birthday Blues LP, given new life here and perhaps new relevance too in the face of recent discoveries & developments. Both tracks have a bit of a death ballad air to them. Revisiting the 1971 Rosemary Lane LP by Bert Jansch with three songs and an instrumental. This happens to not only be my favourite Jansch album, but also my favourite ever acoustic guitar album while the title track is to me the definitive version of the popular old sea shanty. I wore out a cassette tape copy of this album with countless plays over many years. Recent tracks by Peter Knight's Gigspanner Big Band alongside some vintage Steeleye Span, including a Maddy Prior & Gay Woods duet from 1971 and two powerful recordings from 1989's Tempted & Tried. Trevor Lucas features with solo tracks and collaborations with Fairport Convention. Environmental song The Quiet Joys of Brotherhood was performed live acapella with Louis McManus of the Bushwackers. Lucas interestingly sang it into his guitar soundbox to produce a delay multi-tracking effect. The Hawking Brothers do a melodic country version of Catfish John while Ants Bush Band come with a meaty broadside entitled Struggle in the West. Two great acoustic Bob Dylan recordings from the early 1960's; He was a Friend of Mine and Ballad for a Friend from the Whitmark Tapes. The classic 1965 Martin Carthy version of Scarborough Fair. The Martin Simpson cut of Golden Vanity taken from his 1976 debut album is epic. Vibes. Karine Polwart classic The Salters' Road and the Malinky cut of Alison Cross. Women of the World is a cover of an old Ivor Cutler song, performed here with Louis Abbott (of Admiral Fallow) & other friends. Janis Ian makes a rare appearance with early recordings Hair of Spun Gold and the anti-war song Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ye. Barbara Dickson versions of The Lover's Ghost and My Logan Love are from the 1990's. Bob Fox does a deep acoustic version of Trooper Cut Down in His Prime (The Unfortunate Rake). We close with the wonderful ballad Blue in Green by the great Miles Davis from 1959.
