Dirt Roads Trailheads - Dolly Parton Tribute
Dirt Roads Trailheads - Dolly Parton Tribute
Alternative folk-country-rock-bluegrass selection and left-field tribute to the Queen of Country, the incomparable Dolly Parton. Features a few choice cuts from over the years by herself and also some collaborations. While known her mainstream appeal with the widest possible fanbase, Dolly always stayed true to her roots despite the success and never forgot her poor, rural upbringing, doing her best to help various & numerous communities, funding many community building & literacy programmes. Her mighty voice stands out as does her clear & unaffected, natural delivery and legendary stage/screen presence. She is sorely missed by many but her songs will always live on...

Tracks from the great Together at the Bluebird Cafe live album by Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt & Steve Earle from 2001 along with various other cuts. Songs from Clark's Cold Dog Soup LP (1999) and Earle's Ghosts of West Virginia (2020) & I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive (2011) sets.
Another spotlight on influential folk singer & activist Eliza Gilkyson. She's been steadfast over the decades with her songs of social reality, environmental concerns and political defiance, wielding both acoustic and electric strings with equal impact. Tracks here from her brilliant 2022 LP Songs From The River Wind. The historical song Charlie Moore is our top pick with its reflections on the simple things/skills/interactions that we've learned to forget.. Gilkyson stands in the front rank of North American dissenter topical singers still, alongside the likes of Joan Baez, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Morello, Jesse Welles and David Roviks... Onwards & upwards....
Billy Strings released a lively bluegrass album with his Dad Terry Barber in 2022, simply entitled Me and Dad. Prison song Life to Go and John Deere Tractor are standout highlights Some interesting & atmospheric Emmylou Harris songs from around the time of the millennium with Red Dirt Girl & a live performance of Songbird. She also did a true cover of Dolly's To Daddy in 1977. Three memorable tracks by David Allan Coe from his 1974 album The Mysterious Rhinestone Cowboy. Four big bootleg 70's tunes from Neil Young, three versions of which eventually made it onto the Rust Never Sleeps (1979) album while a band version of Too Far Gone was later teleported onto the 1989 Freedom LP. The cuts here were all given official publication recently on retrospective releases of the Chrome Dreams & Homegrown albums. Grade A Young. Cameo appearances from Eva Cassidy, Bob Seger, Mary Black, Willie Nelson, The Flatlanders, Eleanor Whitmore, The Eagles and more...
There's a real steady flow to this one....
