On a visit in 1980 my father gifted me his old record collection, around 50 to 100 LPs, that he'd evidently put together from the late-60's to the mid-70's. Not seeing much of him again I never did ask why he offloaded it or if he thought a wee man of 11 would actually appreciate the music. Well it turns ot that he did. In there was a lot of bluesy rock from that time though I don't remember the contents too well to be honest, being a bit young, but I clocked a few artists who stood out as I played though some of it. There was Stephen Stills & the Doobie Brothers but the ones that really left an instant impression on me were Free and Rory Gallagher and I've been a lifelong fan of both every since. Rory Gallagher's Live in Europe blew me away! Unfortunately the collection quietly disappeared soon after, probably sold on by my mother, but luckly four of the albums that were stashed in my bedroom got overlooked and I managed hang on to them. Later (in 1988 I think), I got so see Rory live in Leeds and he gave a long and blazing performance. I feel privilaged to have witnessed the great man in action. He really was an incomparable musician.
