Elvira Madigan Dickie Lubber & Other Curious Folk Ballads
Elvira Madigan Dickie Lubber
and other curious folk ballads
An interesting collection of both well known and obscure folk & folk-rock classics, many of traditional origin. Songs that have a tale to tell and, more often than not, an encoded moral to pass on... by the people about regular people, for the people. Interspersed as usual with some kicking instrumentals, tunes that likewise often held hidden meanings for those who were in the know... English, Irish, Scottish, American and Australian singers & players of instruments.

Folk rock legends Fairport Convention and their Aussie counterparts The Bushwackers feature heavily with some amazing electric-heavy 1970's recordings. Live and studio recordings from Fairport Convention, including a reunion with Sandy Denny for John the Gun. The Bushwackers are among the greatest Australian bands of all time and criminally underrated. Hear tracks from their great Murrumbidgee 1977 and And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda 1976 (later a Pogues hit) LPs here. More uptempo vibes and another mid-70's song later to be done by the Pogues: The Gentleman Soldier as recorded by Jack the Lad. Yorkshire vocalist Kate Rusby comes with several modern interpretations of longtime favourite folk songs like Wild Mountain Thyme and Crazy Man Michael. Tradition broadside performers The Halliard hail from the English Midlands and comprise among others Jon Raven, Dave Moran, Joan Mills, Nik Jones and Nigel Patterson. Experience four tremendously interesting and fabulously obscure songs from their Broadside Songs compilation.
Featuring one fantastic early song by Bob Dylan along with two covers of other tracks from his early songbook by Arlo Guthrie & Christy Moore respectively. Moore also does a brilliant take on Matty Groves entitled Little Musgrave. Bert Jansch brings recordings from 1973 & the late-90's, with a neat live cut of his classic Woman Like You. Mr Fox had a popular hit with the catchy Elvira Madigan in the 1970's. Two very different takes of Willy O Winsbury tale as sung by Andy Irvine & then Barbara Dickson. The song melody borrows from (or lends to) the House Carpenter. The Morris On Band (Ashley Hutchings & friends) keep our feet moving with some traditional melodies in a raucous rock n roll style. Cameos from Linda Thompson, Steve Knightley, Phil Beer, Robin & Barry Dransfield, Michelle Shocked & Uncle Tupelo, Silly Sisters, The Watersons, Jethro Tull and more. Lass of Loch Royal by Maddy Prior borrows part of its the melody from Long Lankin.
