Sandy Denny - Moments In Time

Sandy Denny - Moments In Time

Here's a mixtape that I compiled a long while ago, two parts.

A tribute to The Lady of British folk, the late, great Sandy Denny. One of the truly magnificent singers in the folk genre, or in the music world as a whole in fact. She was blessed with a powerful, natural voice & distinct style and has been credited as a major driving force behind the success of Fairport Convention, the Liege & Leif LP still being regarded as the finest, most complete folk-rock albums ever. These two sessions cover her whole recorded career from 1966 through to her final performance just days before her untimely death in 1977. Sandy explores diverse topics & introduces various fictional or real characters in her songwriting but oft returns to her personal experiences and feelings, especially on her later albums. The passage of time is a clear and present preoccupation throughout much of her work (perhaps she understood deep down that her time was not to be long in this world??). She was of course also well known for her renditions of traditional ballads and Dylan songs.

Her debut solo releases date from 1966 when she set out in London, like others, as a singer-guitarist in the Joan Baez-Judy Collins mould and put out the It's Sandy Denny album which showed her potential. 1967 saw her joining The Strawbs with whom she recorded an album before she left to enjoy greater success with Fairport Convention. Bigger things indeed. They did two great albums together she then rather surprisingly left the band directly after the release of 1969's hugely successful Liege & Leif, going on to form the Fotheringay group and contributing to a The Bunch album in 1970 before focusing exclusively on her solo career for a while. Her next album, 1971's The North Star Grassman and the Ravens was a major triumph, cementing her place in the pantheon of female solo artists of the time. She also performed with Led Zeppelin on Battle of Evermore & on Tommy with The WhoWhile Sandy went on to record another three solo studio LPs and reunited with Fairport for the well received Rising For The Moon and tours 1974-75 she seldom reached the the heights of her late-60's/early-70's work again though she remained a forceful live performer. The advent of disco & glitter rock in the mid 70's led to declining interest in folky music. its just a shame that Sandy never stayed on to see in the 1980's mini folk revival. A number of good retrospective collections & live recordings have been released since her passing. We feature tracks from the bootlegged Ebbets Field concerts in Colorado 1974 - from both her solo & Fairport sets - as well as the final show Gold Dust - Live At The Royalty 1977. A wholesome & comprehensive tribute to a towering, if somewhat tragic, icon of folk music whose voice and arrangements remain unrivalled to this day. Long may her songs be heard...
